Which Gemstone Should You Wear? A Complete Beginner's Guide
by Naman Chitkara • Astro Scientist

One of the most common questions I receive every day is: Which gemstone should I wear? The honest answer is: it depends entirely on your birth chart — not your zodiac sun sign, not your favourite colour, and certainly not what a jeweller recommends.

Gemstone therapy in Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is a precise science. Each of the 9 planets — the Navagrahas — governs specific life areas and is associated with a specific gemstone. Wearing a gemstone strengthens the energy of that planet. But if that planet is already strong, or is malefic for your ascendant, the gem can create imbalance rather than benefit.

How to Determine Which Gemstone to Wear

  1. Identify your Lagna (Ascendant) — the rising sign at the time of your birth, not your sun sign
  2. Identify which planets are benefic for your Lagna — every ascendant has specific favourable planets
  3. Check the strength of that planet in your birth chart — a weak benefic planet is the ideal candidate
  4. Check for afflictions — if the planet is with malefics, additional analysis is needed
Warning — Blue Sapphire

Blue Sapphire (Neelam) is one of the fastest-acting and most powerful gemstones. It is also dangerous if worn incorrectly. Always test for 3 days under a pillow before wearing. Never wear without a certified Jyotish analysis.

Common Mistakes People Make

Quality Matters Enormously

A 2-carat natural, untreated Ruby will outperform a 10-carat treated or synthetic stone every time. Always prioritise quality over size when buying Navagraha gemstones. Insist on GIA or IGI certification and ask specifically about heat treatment.
